Aris Nightclub & Bar

Where Moncton comes to be themselves.

Earlier in the year it came to my attention that the swag little queer bar across from my communal studio (Imago) was under some financial strain. I suppose we all are in the year that is 2026, though there's a stark difference between personal woes and watching a place grow - one which so many call their Happy Hour, their safe space, their home.

Starting mid Pride Month until the end of the summer, I'll be selling 12 layer editions of the C. D. Thomson Residence where Aris is stationed. For architectural history of the property, scroll further down. Proceeds will be divided up to cover the expenses used to put the work together with the rest donated directly to the bar. Use the button below to purchase one of this limited edition prints or inquire further.

C. D. Thomson House

A one and half-story Second Empire residence on the corner of Alma and Botsford. The home's style and mansard roof is super prominent in Saint John, but only a few reside in Moncton. Aside its rarity, the house is recognized for its preservation, decorated dormers, three one-story bay windows, and hardwood, painted marble fireplaces, and paneling which continues on into the upper rental apartments.

The home preserved as the "C. D. Thomson House" is also recognized for its first occupant, C. D. Thomson who had along with his wife and four children, transferred from Saint John to Moncton in 1878 by the Intercolonial Railway (I.C.R.) to work as cashier. This residence, which was built for him, exemplifies his prominence within the I.C.R. The home stayed in his family until it was sold by his second wife in 1919. From 1921 to 1970, the residence stayed in the family of Alvan Lutes, a C.N.R. engineer who would eventually become Yardmaster.

The C. D. Thomson House has gone under many names and addresses over the years mimicking Moncton's shifting nature. Today, it is the home of Aris Nightclub & Bar, a place of prominence as important as its architectural lore.
